Currency and Banks

The Country’s currency is the yen (JPY). If there’s one thing that you need to know before visiting Japan, it’s that cash is king. While it is quite common to see credit cards and contactless payments being accepted now in Japan, you’ll find that many bars, restaurants, and even tourist attractions only accept cash. So come prepared with a mix of cash and credit.
The best place to withdraw cash is at ATMs located within convenience stores which can be found all over the country.

Business Hours General business hours in Japan are weekdays 9 to 5. Banks are open weekdays from 9 until 4 or 5. As with shops, there’s a trend toward longer and later opening hours.

The voltage used throughout Japan is uniformly 100 volts, A.C. Certain types of electrical appliances such as dual-voltage hair dryers, travel irons and shavers should work wherever you are in Japan. However, in other cases, a step-down transformer is required to convert the voltage.
